How many rolls?

The honest answer depends on the pattern repeat, which is where most people come unstuck. Put the numbers off the roll label in below and we’ll do the drop maths, then read what it can’t account for before you order.

Standard British rolls are 10.05 m × 52 cm, but always check the label, because some Farrow & Ball and Little Greene papers differ. Buy all your rolls from the same batch number while you’re at it.

An estimate, not a quote

This calculator does the drop arithmetic for a plain rectangular wall using the roll size and pattern repeat you enter. It has never seen your room, so please treat the answer as a sensible starting point rather than a promise.

Things worth knowing before you order:

  • Check the actual roll label. Most British rolls are 10.05 m × 52 cm, but plenty aren’t, and the pattern repeat has to be the real one.
  • We don’t deduct for doors and windows. That is deliberate, because you cut around them from full drops, but it means a wall that is mostly window will be over-estimated.
  • Chimney breasts, stairwells, sloping ceilings and pattern centring all need working out by eye, not by formula.
  • Trim allowance here is 15 cm per drop. A bold repeat you want centred, or an out-of-true ceiling, will want more.
  • Order it all at once, from the same batch number. Shading between batches is real, and a late extra roll may not match.
