Which finish?

Choosing the colour is the part everybody enjoys. Choosing the finish is the part that decides whether it wipes clean, how much light it throws back, and whether it belongs on a wall or a skirting board. Here is what each of our three brands calls theirs.

Farrow & Ball

The main finishes, from the flattest matt through to a full gloss.

Very matt, traditionally used on walls and ceilings.
Modern Emulsion
Washable, more durable matt.
Dead Flat
Extremely matt, suitable for walls, ceilings, woodwork and metal.
Estate Eggshell
Traditional low-sheen finish, particularly for woodwork.
Modern Eggshell
Tougher, more washable eggshell.
Full Gloss
High-gloss finish.
Exterior Eggshell
Exterior woodwork and metal.
Floor Paint
Hardwearing finish for floors.

Sheen levels are the manufacturers’ own, and ranges change. They are also not measured the same way from one maker to the next, so a bar is worth comparing against the others in its own column and not across brands.
