LRV here is calculated from the on-screen colour, so treat it as a guide. Screens shift colour, so always check a sample on your own wall, in your own light, before committing. We keep sample pots and hand-painted cards in stock.

In Which Finish

Cane, mixed into any of these

Every Farrow & Ball finish is the same colour underneath. What changes is the sheen, how hard it wears and what you can put it on.

Cane is a Farrow & Ball Archive colour. It is mixed to order rather than kept on the shelf, and because it is made up specially it cannot be returned. Worth being sure before you order — come and see it on a hand-painted card first, and we’ll tell you the lead time.

Estate Emulsion 2% sheen
Chalky matt for walls and ceilings in quieter rooms. Gently wipeable, but not washable.
Dead Flat 2% sheen
The same flat look, but washable and scuff resistant, and it takes woodwork and metal too.
Modern Emulsion 7% sheen
Washable matt for kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere that takes a beating. Not inside a shower.
Flat Eggshell 20% sheen
Low-sheen and hardwearing, for skirtings, doors, cabinetry and floors. Replaced Estate Eggshell.
Modern Eggshell 40% sheen
A step shinier and tougher again: radiators, stairs, cabinetry, floors.
Full Gloss 95% sheen
High shine for wood and metal, inside or out. Not for plastic.
Exterior Eggshell 20% sheen
Outside woodwork and metal: windows, railings, guttering, front doors.
Exterior Masonry 2% sheen
Very matt, for brick, render and stucco. Sold in 5 litres only.
Casein Distemper 2% sheen
Highly breathable flat matt for old plaster. Not washable, and nothing else can go over it. Not available in every colour — ask us before you order
Soft Distemper 2% sheen
The traditional powdery finish for fine plasterwork and mouldings. Brush only, 5 litres only. Not available in every colour — ask us before you order
Limewash 2% sheen
Lime finish for lime-rendered walls, inside or out. Not for cement render, gypsum or brick. Not available in every colour — ask us before you order

Sheen levels are the manufacturers’ own, and ranges change. They are also not measured the same way from one maker to the next, so a bar is worth comparing against the others in its own column and not across brands. The tin is always the authority, and if you are choosing between two, bring the job to the counter and we’ll talk it through.

Goes Well With

A scheme built around Cane

Four shades chosen off the colour wheel: a light companion, a deeper relative, a next-door tone and one accent. All of them are on our shelves.

Close Matches

Similar shades across all three brands

Ranked by how close they actually are to Cane, useful if you’re matching existing paintwork, or want the same look in a different range.

Paper & Paint

Papers that work with Cane

Every colourway we stock, scored against this colour. These sit closest, and each one has Cane, or something very near it, somewhere in the pattern.

These pairings are worked out from a photograph of the paper, so the printing, the lighting and your screen have all had a go at the colour before you see it. Treat them as a shortlist worth sampling, not a decision. Bring the paper and a sample pot together in the room, in daylight, before you commit.
